scramble : aircraft taking off in a hurry
wing sweep : a roving operation using the whole Wing
a/c : aircraft
prang : aircraft crashing
Hun : German
Jerry : German
squirted an a/c : firing at an aircraft
frazzle :
base wallahs : Generally a derogatory term for troops living and working at a base well out of
the main operational area
angels 20 : Altitude 20 000 feet
"Glamour King" : Name of Billy Herbert's A/C that Bomb flew when he was shot down
ropy landing : Bad landing
circuits and bumps : Circuits and landings, generally of training flying
diced with a/c : dogfighting
Kitties : Curtiss Kittyhawk aircraft P40
Wizard : Great, as in Wizard Show - a most successful op.
Pilots tried translating this term into literal Afrikaans and came up with 'n
dolosgooier tentoonstelling
bogies : unidentified aircraft
bandits : enemy aircraft
kite : aircraft
pooped : shot at enemy
gremlins : imaginary creatures causing failure of aircraft functions
jumped, bounced : aircraft attacking opposite forces aircraft
109 : Messerschmitt Bf-109 aircraft
88 : Junkers Ju-88 aircraft
